mustard bath recipe

Guys, I know you’ve already heard about my dear friend and mentor, Kristine. She is the best. She inspires me, she points me relentlessly to Jesus, AND she introduced me to mustard bath several years ago! What a friend!

If you don’t know what mustard bath is (or if, quite frankly, the thought of taking a bath in mustard sounds absolutely revolting to you), rest assured that it is not what you’re thinking! Epsom salts scented with the refreshing fragrance of eucalyptus, spearmint, rosemary, and wintergreen combine to create a sinus-clearing, muscle-relaxing bunch of goodness. And yes, mustard powder features in the blend, but it’s good, I promise!

If you like researching things, Medical News Today has an article about the purported benefits of mustard baths. I couldn’t find a lot of conclusive research about it because not a lot of scientists have studied the effects of bathing in mustard (go figure), but some of the general benefits cited include:

  • Detoxification (as mustard stimulates sweat glands, which helps the body excrete toxins)

  • Pain and stress relief (as the essential oils and Epsom salts help the body relax. Hot water also helps with this!)

  • Congestion relief (as your sinuses get cleared out with the essential-oil-infused steam)

  • Skin rejuvenation (out with the old, in with the new!)

Plus, this makes such a great gift. It’s easy to make, it’s small, and it’s finite. I just love giving and receiving gifts that can be used up so they don’t end up getting dusty on some forgotten shelf.

Let’s do this thing!

  2. Stir together mustard powder and baking soda until thoroughly combined.

1/2 cup mustard powder, 1/2 cup baking soda.

  3. Stir both Epsom salt and mustard powder mixtures together until it looks well blended. Spoon into jars.

  4. To use bath salts, add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup to hot bathwater and enjoy!
